Best Beaches in cyprus
Beaches are everywhere in Cyprus always just a short drive or walk away. One can stop almost anywhere on the coast line and enjoy the calm ethereal beauty of the turquoise Mediterranean waters.
Cyprus has invested a lot in development and maintenance of its public beaches and there are several blue flag beaches. Cypriots are proud of their beaches. The most popular beaches are :
- In and around Ayia Napa, Protaras: Agia Thekla, Vatha Gonia, Pantahou, Kermia, Konnos Bay, Landa beach, Fig Tree Bay, Makronissos beach, Protaras beach
- In and aroud Limassol : Governor’s beach, Dassoudi, Akti Olympion,
- In and around Paphos : Petra tou Romiou (the most scenic spot on the island), Latsi, Blue lagoon, Municipal beach, Pissouri beach
- In and around Larnaca: Mackenzie beach, Phinikoudes Beach, Kiti beach, Dhekelia beach
The following beaches however stand apart:
Kourion Beach, Limassol
Surrounded by high white cliffs on one side and next to the ancient 2nd century Kourion amphitheatre, it is a beautiful beach loved
especially for its waves on a windy day. Against the majestic backdrop, and with beautiful long stretch of pebble beach, it is loved by locals and tourists alike. Cafes on the beach which open only in summer offer good quick snacks between the swims. Water is choppy and there is enough wind most days to support paragliding for the adventurous.
Coral Bay, Paphos
About 10kms outside Paphos, it is a bay with natural sandy beach with shallow waters embraced by the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Don’t miss the sunset here.
Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa
This exotic beach is the pride of Ayia Napa and is loved for its clean white sand and crystal clear, calm waters. It’s a prominent landmark of Ayia Napa and one of the most popular beaches in Cyprus. The small island a few meters away adds to its beauty. It’s a bathers paradise and offers a whole lot of water sports facilities.
Ladies’ Mile, Limassol
Its called a windsurfer’s paradise with pebbled and sandy beaches and with Limassol port as a back drop. You can walk endlessly here if you don’t want to get into water and feed the sea gulls. Its has some very good restaurants serving traditional Cyprus food and
fresh fish delicacies.
Governors Beach, Limassol
Few Kms outside Limassol towards Nicosia is this little isolated popular family beach with shallow waters and white rocks. Its perhaps named after the first British governor of Limassol Colonel Warren. There is also a good camping site here and good restaurants with well maintained gardens.
Pissouri Beach, between Limassol & Paphos
This almost hidden beach is located off beautiful village of Pissouri.Very popular with Cypriots for weekends getaways the Pissouri Bay has long unexplored starches of pebbled beaches. It has got a very friendly Cypriot atmosphere.
Pantahou Beach, Ayia Napa
Also known as Harbour Beach, its very popular amongst locals and tourists. This beach is the longest beach, i think, in Cyprus and goes on for about a kilometre. Quieter beach than most others its ideal for a relaxed day out. The water sports and usual surroundings add a special touch to this beautiful beach - its one of my personal favourites.
New Golden Bay, Ayia Napa
Also known as Landa beach is again one of the quieter beaches in the area - far from the maddening crowd - as they say! A perfect family place.
Dasoudi Beach, Limassol
Dasoudi beach is the best one can expect in the centre of the town . The Eucalyptus trees simply add to the beauty of this long stretch of beach.
Akti Olympion, Limassol
This is my personal favourite within the town limits of Limassol city. The two km beach merges into the Dasoudi beach is one of the best blue flag beaches in Cyprus. Huge parking place, walkways and places to east around the beach.
Mackenzie Beach, Larnaca
This beach is just before where the planes arriving in Larnaca airport touch down. You can actually wave to the passengers in the planes! Smaller but sandy beach with restaurants and nice Palm trees. Ideal for families as waters are shallow.
Finikoudhes beach, Larnaca
One of the most well equipped beaches in Cyprus. Spread between the Larnaca Marina and Larnaca port, this beach offers all most everything. A whole range of restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops and ice cream parlours etc across the best Promenade in Cyprus. The lamp posts along the Promenade are the most unique feature of the landscape here.
