Astypalaia, Greece. One of the Dodecanese island group in the warm Aegean Sea, Astypalaia is another gorgeous, but relatively undiscovered gem. It counts a long and glorious history: it received a status of a free state when Roman Empire ruled the world and had the Querini castle on the top of the hill. Today various archaeological sites and intact treasures from the classical period are open to view.
Museum at Pera Gialos features pottery, bronze weapons and stone tools. The chapel of Agia Varvara houses a very well preserved mosaic floor from an early Christian basilica. The island’s landscape features white houses clustered together on the hills, overlooking the sea. Great beaches provide a nice leisurely day out, while restaurants will spoil with fresh sea food and wine.
